They combine the features of fairway woods and long irons. Long irons are generally harder to hit, so the hybrid club came about. Hybrid clubs also play to about the same length as their respective iron #. For instance a #3 hybrid has a shaft length about the same length as a #3 iron. So, to sum it up.. its a smaller headed fairway wood, with a shorter shaft.
