What would you suggest for a beginner? What would be the best way to get started. I go to college full-time, and I'm wondering if I could maybe join the club at school.
Depending on how dedicated you are to really improving your game, I would suggest practicing mostly on a putting green and chipping green. This is called the "short game" and these two areas alone can either add or subtract 10 strokes or more to/from your score. Ofcourse you cannot neglect swinging a club but since you say you've swung before and since you say you're into sports, my guess is you will be able to pick that part of the game up more quickly.
Don't worry about hitting the ball too far at first, solid contact is everything. Start out by only swinging about 75 percent and just work on striking the ball clean. For a beginner, you should be trying to "sweep" the grass that lies under the ball.
Eventually, once you have your swing down, you can work on distance and really start to hit down on the ball. Make sure you work on your wrist strenght as if you try to swing too hard too soon, you can hurt yourself.
Some basic Rules when, learning How to play golf.... There are a lot of rules to golf so i won't go over that. There are various rules and they are pretty confusing if you try to read the rule book. The point of golf is to get a ball into a cup. You do so by using your clubs and putter. The whole point is to do it in a few strokes as possible. Every time you hit the ball, it counts as a stroke. Every hole has a PAR rating. 3,4 or 5. For simplicity, the lower number means a shorter hole. You are expected to finish that hole and that many strokes. Don't feel bad if you can't, not a lot of people can, including me! its the way you keep score. Par is the even line. if it takes you 5 strokes to finish a par 3, that 2 over Par. at the end of 18 holes you add them up and subtract it from the courses par rating, usually 70-73. so if its a 72 and you shoot 82, thats 10 over(+10). if you shoot a 69, its 3 under (-3)
